Besides the obvious cost (e.g., time, money and energy) from video game addiction to one's real life, scientific studies have revealed significant differece between pathological gamers (people who are addicted to video games) and people who are not addicted to video games: 

Pathological gamers are more likely to have been diagnosed with an attention problem (e.g., attention-deficit disorder or attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder);

Pathological gamers are more likely to have been in a physical fight in the past year;

Pathological gamers are more likely to receive a lower grade in school;

Pathological gamers are more likely (frequently) in having wrist pain and or hand/finger pain. 

 

The following facts are also associated video game addiction and may be possible causes:

A higher percentage of pathological gamers has friends who are addicted to video games than people who are not addicted to video games; 

A higher percentage of pathological gamers has a video-game system in the bedroom than people who are not addicted to video games.
